In October 2019, Lene Marie died of anorexia. She watched the finished film before she passed away. Together with her parents, she decided that the film should be launched on schedule, as it was important for Lene Marie that her story could mean something to others. Self Portrait is a film about the power of art. It raises important questions about what treatment one who suffers from severe anorexia needs. The audience gets to meet an unusual girl in a raw and poetic film.
The directors Espen Wallin, Margreth Olin, and Katja Høgset have, through close cooperation, followed Lene Marie through ups and downs, severe illness, and her artistic journey.
The movie started when photographer Espen Wallin got to know Lene Marie through her photos. They developed a friendship, and Espen became so fascinated by Lene's vitality, work capacity, and artistic talent that he began filming her. He later contacted filmmakers Margreth Olin and Katja Høgset. They were deeply affected by Lene Marie's pictures and personality and wanted to help tell her story – a story about an extraordinary photo talent with a widespread and often misunderstood illness. Lene Marie hoped that her story could teach us something about psychiatry's most deadly disease.
