Director Amirali Mirderikvand Interview (Sfumato)

Creative Documentary Center

The Peloponnisos International Doc Film Festival's purpose has always been to introduce the audience of Peloponnese some very special films from all over the world. This year according to the difficult circumstances it was decided that there will be a hybrid version of the festival with an ONLINE release in February and a live premiere in May. In this situation we asked volunteers and festival staff to interview the directors of the ONLINE program to bring them closer with the audience even if they couldn't have met in the theaters. Behind the scenes information, personal stories and more in depth approach to the films are available through these interviews. The interviews of the films included in the "Claiming Freedom" tribute have been conducted by the students of Theater Studies of University of Peloponnese, as one part of our collaboration with the University.

Amirali Mirderikvand from Iran talks about his experiences, difficulty of making this film and his personal reasons in the interview bellow.
Interview:

Would you like to say a few words?

In the name of God, I am Amirali mirderikvand from IRAN,  Director of SFUMATO, really excited to have my film at this festival.

My first question is why this story?

I was born in a village and I was very interested in making film in the countryside, in the other hand I am very interested in make films about social issues ,human rights and especially women's rights.
So, this was a good and suitable story.

How did you meet the protagonist?
Simply!
I was researching and looking for a subject.
On that situation, some one introduce me Fatima and her family. I went to thier home. I had meetings with Fatima's family for several times and I explained about my idea and my goals. They welcomed me and immediately a difficult and complex task began.

What does it mean for you personally to make this documentary?
As I said I am very interested in working on people's rights in today's society. And as an independent filmmaker, it is my duty  to pay attention to these issues. I have made films about women's rights, the rights of the disabled, the rights of the villagers, the rights of the poor and so on. Paying attention to women's rights in society is very important to me and I would like to work more on this,
For my compatriots and all the people of the world,
For my mother, my sisters and maybe my daughters....

Last but not least, are you still in contact with the protagonists, are things better right now for gender equality in your country?

Yes,I am in connect with Fatima and her family especially her father Ebrahim.
About better rights for gender equality, honestly, NO,
But we are efforting to make changes in this issue. We hope to be better in future..

Thank you again for being with us, we are really happy to screen your film.
Thank you and others who help you to hold this festival,  I appreciate you.
Have a good time.
