Solar Cinema Greece is here!

Creative Documentary Center

The Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata, organizer of the Peloponnese International Documentary Festival, leads the way again, bringing for the first time to our country, mobile film equipment based entirely on solar energy.

At a time when the transition to renewable energy sources, and energy conservation in general, has become imperative, artistic communities could not refrain from this effort.

Solar Cinema Greece’s mission is to widen access to cinema, to raise awareness among the public and to initially emphasize the importance of the transition to renewable energy sources, by showing – with absolute self-sufficiency – documentaries and feature films, also in remote areas. The basic equipment of solar mobile cinemas are: Solar panels, self-propelled van, video projector and giant screen.

As part of the ongoing events of the Peloponnese International Doc FIlm Festival, the opening of the first Mobile Solar Cinema in Greece will take place on Saturday, September 10, at the Central Port of Kalamata, with the screening of the film Digger by Tzortzis Grigorakis. The screening will also mark the beginning of a series of screenings in Peloponnese cities, which will be completed on October 1st.

Solar Cinema Greece is a major parallel activity of the Peloponnese International Documentary Festival organized by the Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata.Since 2020, the organization has officially become an exclusive member of Solar World Cinema, an international network of solar mobile cinemas.

The implementation of the Solar Cinema program in Greece is done in collaboration with the Smart RUE Research Group, and the Electrical Energy Systems Laboratory of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. According to the relevant memorandum of cooperation, the team has already prepared the study and is currently installing the required photovoltaic system, while it will also undertake the technical training of the Festival partners, so that the solar cinema will appear in the squares of our towns and villages !

ADMIE (Independent Electricity Transmission Operator), responsible for the development and maintenance of the Greek Electricity Transmission System throughout the Greek territory, was a valuable supporter in the effort to implement this pioneering project.
