"Documentary films for all: Accessible documentary
screenings for deaf, hard of hearing and blind people"

With the screening of two special short student documentaries, Peloponnisos International Documentary Film Festival launches its cooperation with the EKOME (National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication), on Friday, June 18, during the opening ceremony event of the 7th Peloponnisos International Doc Film Festival in Kalamata.

Documentary is a genre that should be enjoyed by all people. Although steps are being taken in this direction, Greek documentary films still fall behind in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities. EKOME attempted for the first timef special subtitling (SDH) and audio description of the films One School, Two Worlds and Never say "it’s too late", which come straight from the educational program of the Chania Film Festival, with which EKOME has already established a strong cooperation.
Aiming to the inclusion of people with disabilities, the ultimate goal is to raise awareness regarding the accessibility of audiovisual production that is addressed to special categories of the population. At the same time, the goals of this initiative are also: the promotion of the documentary as a genre that is addressed to everyone, its educational potential, the need for its preservation as a genre and its further promotion not only in Greece, but also abroad.

The event will be addressed by Stelios Kymionis, Head of the Development and Digital Content Management Department of EKOME, and Irini Andriopoulou, Head of the Research, Studies and Educational Programmes Department of EKOME.

A few words about EKOME:

The mission of the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication-EKOME is the protection, support and promotion of public and private initiatives, domestic and foreign, in the field of audiovisual media and communication in Greece. The establishment and operation of EKOME is one of the most important initiatives and most innovative interventions of the Greek administration in audiovisual production, entrepreneurship and education, which aims to support them as key financial development components in the country.
Now, Greece is responding to the new challenges that arise in the audiovisual sector and to its affiliated industries, who belong to the wider field of creative industries, in education, research and digitization of archives. The aim, through EKOME, is to create a meeting point of all the productive components of the audiovisual industry with the public, which, through the cooperation with the competent ministries, regional and municipal authorities, will significantly strengthen the domestic audiovisual market. EKOME functions as a focal point, and at the same time, as an incubator of ideas and actions, which will allow the necessary conditions to be gradually created, so that young people can find the creative way they seek first in their country, but also in the international labor market.
