Opening of the exhibition of Ritual Masks of the Collection of Fotis Kangelaris

Creative Documentary Center

The opening ceremony of a unique exhibition titled "From factual to beyond", featuring an African ceremonial mask collection by F. Kagelaris was held on Sunday, April 3rd, in the art gallery "A49".

The ceremony's host was mr. Kagelaris himself, who referred to masks from his collection, gave a speech citing psychoanalysis and art.

The exhibition's curator, Natalia Stamopoulou and deputy mayor Maria Aggeli were also present at the ceremony. The exhibition also welcomed journalists, artists and locals, who admired the 25 wall-mounted and 8 pedestal-mounted masks, as well as jewelry from mister Kagelaris' collection.

The masks are from different western African regions (Mali, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast), aiming to present the symbolic use of masks in everyday life and life milestones of individuals or communities (like circumcision, birth, wedding, hunting, disease cure).

The exhibition, which is held under the 8th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival, featuring "Sub-Saharan African Cultures", will be open daily until April 10, in the "A49" art gallery, from 11:00-15:00 and 18:00-21:00.

Entrance is free under current public health restrictions regarding Covid-19.
