The countdown for the premiere of the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival has begun - Press conference 6

10 days, 9 cities, 77 documentaries, 34 Greek premiere, 22 educational documentaries, two new partnerships with university institutions, plenty of Greek and foreign directors and a great panorama on the environment and climate change form part of this year’s identity of the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival. It is held by the Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata (non-profit organization) and opens its gates on January 17th having the city of Kalamata at its core. 6

6 Having been improved and extended and having to-the-point topics the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival presents a wide range of documentaries by filmmakers around the world, who by holding one of the world’s most powerful tools, a camera, carry ground-breaking messages about the life under constant struggle. Frames that carry inspiring stories and trouble us about the role (no matter how small it might be) we play at the life’s story.

This year’s Festival’s panorama is “Human and the Environment”. “Άνθρωπος και Περιβάλλον”.

This year, two Audience Awards will be given to the best Greek and foreign documentaries as well as a Committee Award by the Festival’s Equality Committee to the film best highlighting the issue of gender relations.

The screenings begin in January 17th and last until the January 27th 2020 in Kalamata. In the meantime, parts of the festival will also take place in Patras (19-24/1), Tripolis (19-22/1), Argos (18-20/1), Amaliada (24-26/1), Sparta (22-25/1), Dimitsana (22-23/1), Gythion (17-19/1) και Xylokastro (25-27/1).

Gina Petropoulou, the festival’s Artistic Director, has begun the countdown for the festival’s opening. The festival is scheduled to last ten days, more specifically from the 17th to the 27th of January. “This year’s festival has been extended regarding the cities participating. Apart from Kalamata, which is the centre of the Festival, screenings will also take place in eight more cities. This year’s program consists of 77 documentaries of Greek and foreign production while 34 of them will have their Greek premiere. The educational zone consists of 22 documentaries focusing on the environment.

Like every year, this year’s special theme of the festival is the “Environment and climate change” and is held in partnership with the MEDITERRANEAN SOS Network and the Hellenic Society for the Environment & Culture.

Iara Lee, the Brazilian filmmaker and activist, is the official guest and will be in Kalamata for six days and she will give a seminar for the students of the Athens School of Fine Arts as well as for the general public, the citizens of Kalamata.”

Seminars continue at the same pace this year by also being extended. As stated by Petropoulou: “Apart from the Seminars for adults there will also be seminars for students. There is also a very nice photo exhibition about climate change with photos by the Russian photographer and filmmaker Vlad Sokhin. Moreover, an Open Pottery Workshop having the environment as a theme will take place. There, the people of the city along with students of the Culture Club, “Kallitechniko Steki” will create objects of clay and we will place them in different parts of the city and let them return back to nature through time. Ilias Christopoulos from Kallitechniko Steki came up with this idea.”

We would like to remind that under the educational part of the festival there will be visits to some schools in the Region with transport issues. There, selected documentaries will be screened with the director being present, while preliminary production seminars will be given to the students.

Important new partnerships…

The Festival partners for a second year now with the School of Fine Arts with senior and postgraduate students participating in a seminar in Kalamata that will be edited and presented by the internationally acclaimed director, Iara Lee.

A new partnership begins with the School of Film of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with fourth-year students attending the festival and participating in a seminar given by the Dutch filmmaker Robert Rombout so as to produce a documentary about Kalamata and the area of Messinia.

The Department of Cultural Management of the University of Peloponnese will be actively involved in the organisation of the festival. During a three-month period its first-year students have conducted interviews with the directors whose documentaries will be screened in the festival.

This year begins a new partnership with the Department of Theater Studies of the University of Peloponnese, based in Nafplio, whose students will evaluate and award the prize for the best Greek documentary. Kleoni Flessa, the Festival’s Artistic Advisor, presented these new partnerships and as she stated “we are really glad to start these new partnerships”. “Last year we had the partnered with the School of Fine Arts that continues being on our side this year.

For the first time, this year begins a partnership with the School of Film as well as with the Department of Theatrical Studies. Students from the School of film will come in order to attend a seminar on film production, while the students of the Department of Theatrical Studies will watch all the Greek films participating in the competition section and award their own prize.

We also continue the partnership with the Department of Cultural Management of the University of Peloponnese whose students has already started working by interviewing filmmakers and publishing the on the Press.”

A new collaboration also begins with the Aristotle University Film School where senior students will attend the festival, participating in a seminar given by Dutch filmmaker Robert Rombout, with a goal to produce a documentary regarding Kalamata and Messinia.

The Department of Cultural Management of the University of Peloponnese, will be actively involved in the organizational tasks of the festival, where freshman students will conduct a series of interviews with foreign documentary filmmakers, during their academic quarter.

The Ministry of Culture, another ally for the Festival

During the official Press conference for the Festival, Gina Petropoulou shared the good news about signing a few days ago a three-year convention with the Ministry of Culture.

That was a positive outcome that as she stated herself will provide a sense of confidence regarding the future that now seems brighter.

“This year again, the Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture – the partnership began last year – and we are very happy for this happening because we signed a three-year convention that gives us the possibility for the next three years to believe that the Festival will survive no matter what”.

The Festival’s Artistic Director thanked the Region of Peloponnese, the Vice-Governor for the Regional Unit of Messinia, Efstathios Anastasopoulos, the Municipality of Kalamata and the mayor Thanasis Vasilopoulos for participating in the co-organisation of the festival.

A support in the effort of the Center and the Festival are as always the volunteers whose valuable help was praised by Petropoulou by thanking them warmly for their great contribution.

She finally thanked the Sponsors of the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival for their significant support: • VOLKSWAGEN Koutoumanou (provided vehicle for transportations) • FARMAGROUP • IEK DELTA 360 • STEFILM Post Production (sponsor of the Audience Award) • Messinian Chamber of Commerce and Industry • Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation .

The region of Peloponnese, represented in yesterday’s press conference by the Vice-Governor Efstathios Anastasopoulos, supports for another year the greatest event of the Creative Documentary Center of Peloponnese, the International Documentary Festival. Mr Anastasopoulos congratulated: “Mrs Petropoulou and all the officials of the Creative Documentary Center of Peloponnese, that is based in Kalamata, for the effort they are making, the variety of themes and the great involvement of specialists as well as the involvement of viewers, that we also encourage them to enjoy all these screenings.

We support the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival that is based in Kalamata and has the scope of the entire geographical Region of Peloponnese and this is very important.”

As stated by the Vice-Governor for the region of Messinia, a strong motif for supporting the festival is its brief but rich history. “Another element that makes us participate and be co-organisers is the course of this specific Festival in earlier years. It has proved the quality work that is being done but it is also very important that it contributes in getting younger generations to know this art. It is something that I believe it improves our region and the whole area of the Peloponnese.” At the end of his speech Mr Anastasopoulos wished good luck and encouraged the citizens of Kalamata to attend the events of the 6th Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival. Thus, we are glad to invite you for the sixth time in a row to watch documentaries by filmmakers from every corner of the world with topics that can raise awareness and alert you…

With best regards,

Creative Documentary Center of Kalamata
