Writing and directing a documentary with the Dutch director Robert Rombout. 12 students of the School of Fine Arts will implement and present to the audience of Kalamata the results of the seminar


Rob Rombout is an independent documentary film-maker, teacher and lecturer.

He co-founded the International DocNomads Master Program and is now course director for DN at LUCA, Brussels.

Most of his films were co-produced and / or shown on international television channels and awarded in several festivals.

Rob Rombout was during 10 years vice-president of the Belgian Committee of the French Author Organization SCAM

He was member of film-commissions in Belgium & France.

He is member of the advisory board of the the American University of Technologies in Beirut.



A masterclass by Iranian director Keywan Karimi about Iranian cinema from the point of view of the director himself. The masterclass will take place at the Kallitexniko Steki (Benaki Street 5, Historic Center of Kalamata) and is free to the public. Keywan Karimi (born 21 September 1985) is an Iranian independent filmmaker of Kurdish origin. He graduated with ad degree communication studies form the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tehran. Karimi began his work with a series of short documentary films which were a critique of human life in contemporary Iran. He was sentenced to six years in prison and 223 lashes because of the content of his films.

Karimi specializes in a style of film making which is a totally different way of approaching cinema. This unique view is part inspired by the Situationist International of which Guy Debordis an example. He has developed an interest in examining and critiquing the roots of radical life in society. His unique cinematic view led Behrouz Safdari (translator of the Situationist book in Farsi) to dedicate his articles to Karimi with the phrase "I dedicated my book to Keywan Karimi for his pure consciousness in seeing life and creative unpretentious in his film making".

The seminar will take place at the Kallitexniko Steki (Benaki Street 5, Historic Center of Kalamata), from 10:00 to 14:00, and is free to the public.

Pôl Seif (1985) is a cinematographer by education and spontaneous musician and performer by practice. After finishing his audiovisual studies in IESAV Beirut, he went to INSAS Brussels to specialize in cinematography.

He has been working since then between Lebanon and Europe and distinguished himself with his cinematography on award winning movies like Singing in Exile, a documentary by Nathalie Rossetti, Morine a feature by Tony Farjallah and many other award winnig short movies like The incident by Meedo Taha.

He collaborated with Liviu Pancu, Jalal Khoury, Rafic Ali ahmad, Caroline Safarian, Carlos Chahine, Monira el Qadri, Omar Rajeh on theatre plays and performances between Europe and Beirut.

Pôl dedicates the rest of his time for music with the Belgian based group Molo Sayat, and since this summer he collaborates with two Neapolitan and Calabrian traditional groups in Italy and France.

Experienced journalist turned documentary film producer and director. Deep insight into sport, history and all things Greek.

My first film The Road to Sparta was funded predominantly through crowd-funding but went on to be nominated for Best Documentary at the 2017 British Sports Journalism Awards.

Also sports commentator and voiceover artist.

Prior to becoming a journalist, I worked in theatre in London as a stage doorman and actor. Was also a paid script-reader for Steven Berkoff.

Modern production of documentary

The development of documentary in the countries of Asia by Rajesh James (director of the documentary Naked Wheels). Presentation of 3 important documentaries from India about gender equality.

Rajesh James is an award-winning documentary film maker and film researcher from Kochi, India. He was awarded the prestigious Riyad Wadia Award for Best Emerging Filmmaker, India in 2017. His documentary Naked Wheels won K.F.Patil Unity in Diversity Award for Best Documentary Short at Kashish International Queer Film Festival Mumbai in 2017. He was also awarded PK Rossy Puraskaram for Best Documentary 2016 by Kerala Sthree Padana Kendram, Government of Kerala at International Feminist Film Festival of Kerala 2016.He has directed documentary films like In Thunder, Lightning and Rain (2018) Naked Wheels (2017) and Zebra Lines (2014).

  1. Master class workshop by Nefise Özkal Lorentzen.
    Trilogy on the topic of genders in Islam. The following three documentaries by Nefise Özkal Lorentzen will be screened:
    1. A BALLOON FOR ALLAH Women and Islam 58 min
    2. MANISLAM Masculinity and Islam 58 min
    3. GENDER ME Homosexuality and Islam 58min.
    The objective is the creation of a new approach to the subject of Equality.

Nefise Özkal Lorentzen is a Turkish-Norwegian writer, filmmaker and producer living in Oslo. She received her B.A in Political Science at Bosphorus University in Istanbul and her M.A in Media and Communication at the University of Oslo. Over the past two decades she has produced and directed several controversial documentaries related to Islam. As a result of her dedication to LGBTQ people and human rights activism through her films, she's been named one of the TOP 10 immigrant role models in Norway. Her trilogy of films entitled, Gender Me (2008), A Balloon for Allah (2011), and ManIslam (2014), brings alive these untold stories through public visibility. Nefise has received several awards and nominations, and her films have premiered in several prestigious festivals such as the IDFA, the Rhode Island Film Festival, and the Göteborg Film Festival to just name a few. She was nominated for the History Makers Award in NYC. Utilizing her workshop concept, "gender activism through films", she has been cooperating with various NGOs, and hopes one day gender segregation and violence against women will be a long-forgotten aspect of history.


Seminar about the art of stop motion (animation techniques with models made with plasticine) and the Rempetiko song (type of Greek urban folk music) through the perspective of the director Thomas Kunstler. Two films of his will be screened, “Rempetiko” and “You don’t say a word”.

Thomas Kunstler is an Italian documentary filmmaker based in Athens. Since a very young age he has been involved with stop motion animation and since 2015 he produced and directed two stop motion short films Rebetiko and De Les Kouventa (You Don’t Say a Word) dealing with Greek music and culture. Today he is working on Markos: a stop motion animation feature film about the life of the rembetiko musician Markos Vamvakaris.
