Richard Legaspi

Legaspi completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of the East, majoring in Advertising Arts. He was also a filmmaking fellow at the prestigious Asian Film Academy in Busan, South Korea. Since then, his films had been officially selected in more than 150 film festivals around the world. In 2013, he received the prestigious UNESCO Laureate scholarship and eventually became a resident artist of the Università delle Idee – Italy where he also won the ILLY DESIGN PRIZE – Art for Social Change.

He is two-time Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines for Alternative Film and Video awardee, 62nd Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature winner in 2012, Gawad Urian nominee in 2013 and 2015, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Competitive (NCCA) grant winner in 2009 and 2012, Cinemalaya 2009 and Cinema One 2012 Film Festivals Jury Prize winner, and International Photography Awards (IPA) 2017 – Silver Prize winner for moving images. In 2017, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) acknowledged him as one of the Philippine Film Ambassadors for winning in Kingston, Jamaica.

Legaspi was the first Filipino artist featured in the retrospective of Monsoon Asia Film Festival 2016 in Taiwan. He also received the Taiwan Emerald Initiative grant for his documentary full-length project “Halfway Home” (In Development) in 2018, and he was selected for a pitching workshop and forum at the Kota Kinabalu IFF for another documentary “Place, Displace, and Replace” the following year.

This year, Legaspi will release his new film “Bakit Ako Sinusundan ng Buwan?” – one of the competitive grant winners of the NCCA Values Short Film Festival. He also recently received a script development fund under the FDCP CreatePHFilms Fund first cycle for “Alamat ng Gumamelang Bukid.”
